William Henry Smith

William Henry Smith (1808-1872), philosopher, and man of letters. Born in London, he was educated at Edinburgh University. A friend of J. S. Mill and F. D. Maurice, he contributed to Blackwood's Magazine from 1839, and was the author of an article entitled 'Mr Ruskin's Works' (see Blackwood's Magazine, September 1851). From 1846 he lived in Keswick in the Lake District. He was offered the chair of Moral Philosophy at Edinburgh but declined.
