Richard Monckton Milnes (1809-1885), later Baron Houghton. Educated at Cambridge, where he became a member of The Apostles, Milnes was a friend of, among others, Tennyson, W. M. Thackeray, and Coventry Patmore. He became an M.P. in 1837, and published a biography of John Keats in 1848. Ruskin met Milnes in 1844 as recorded in Works, 36.37.
