Earlier that year, in January and February 1844, Ruskin replied to queries addressed to the editor of the Artist's and Amateur's Magazine prompted by Modern Painters I. Ruskin's letters provide a useful insight into the aims of Modern Painters I (See Works, 3.645-61.)
