In reviewing Modern Painters II, the critic of the Church of England Quarterly Review makes a retrospective assessment of Modern Painters I, welcoming its spiritual emphasis as an antidote to prevailing utilitarian attitudes (see here). Not only is a moderation of earlier hostility to the work noted (see here), but Modern Painters I is credited with raising the price of contemporary art (see here).
