Ellen Wright Clayton

Ellen Wright Clayton, MD, JD, is the Rosalind E. Franklin Professor of Genetics and Health Policy, Professor of Pediatrics, and Professor of Law at Vanderbilt University. She has examined the social implications of genetics for many years. Her empirical projects include examining factors that influence interest in genetic testing for CF carrier status as well as mutations that predispose people to develop primary pulmonary hypertension. She has been very involved in developing policy on topics ranging from newborn screening to international guidelines for genetics research. She has served as a member of the Advisory Council for the National Human Genome Research Institute, co-chair of the ELSI Working Group of the International HapMap Project, and a member of the IOM Committee on Genomics and the Public's Health in the 21st Century. She is currently a member of the IOM's Committee on Assessing Interactions Among Social, Behavioral, and Genetic Factors in Health.
