John Dupré

John Dupré received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge , spent two years as a Junior Research Fellow at St. John's College, Oxford, and then taught for 14 years at Stanford University in California, where he became a full professor of philosophy. In 1996 he returned to the U.K. where he took up positions as Professor of Philosophy at Birkbeck College, London, and Senior Research Fellow at the University of Exeter. He now works full-time at Exeter where he is Professor of Philosophy of Science, and Director of the ESRC Centre for Genomics in Society (Egenis).

His major field of specialisation is the philosophy of biology. As well as numerous articles in journals and anthologies, he is the editor of The Latest on the Best: Essays on Evolution and Optimality (MIT, 1987), and the author of The Disorder of Things: Metaphysical Foundations of the Disunity of Science (Harvard, 1993), Human Nature and the Limits of Science (Oxford, 2001), Humans and Other Animals (Oxford, 2002), and Darwin's Legacy: What Evolution Means Today (Oxford, 2003).
