Gillian Haddow

Gillian Haddow joined INNOGEN in May 2004 as a 21 CGH research fellow and as part of the team working on the ethical, legal and social aspects of Generation Scotland - specifically the public engagement and consultation of Scotland's first national genetic database. Researching DNA donation follows on from her previous work which was also to do with the social positioning and acceptance of innovative medical therapies.

In the Ph.D. thesis, "Organ Donation and Transplantation: The Paradox of Gifting and Embodiment," she explored the social dimensions of organ transplantation and donation and how wider socio-cultural values about gifting, death and the body were brought to the specific context of an organ donation request effecting some bereaved families' donation decision. This led to an ESRC post-doctoral fellowship award that was held at the School of Social and Political Studies, University of Edinburgh.

Gillian has also worked as a qualitative researcher in an inter-disciplinary team conducting a multi-method evaluation of the nurse telephone-triage system'NHS 24' and has been a member of the local research ethics committee for a number of years.
