Mairi Levitt

Mairi Levitt studied sociology and religious studies at Edinburgh University and Exeter University. She joined Cesagen as Deputy Director in July 2004. Before that she held positions at the College of St. Mark and St. John in Plymouth; the Open University and UCLAN. Mairi teaches on the Cesagen MA in Genetics, Culture and Society (provide link with Study page)

Completed research projects include

  • 2001-02: A novel media based strategy to facilitate public consultation in medical genetics in Lancashire funded by the Wellcome Trust (Principal Applicant)
  • 2000-03: EMPIRE: Empirical methods in bioethics funded by the European Union under Framework 5 Quality of Life (co-ordinator Dr. Søren Holm, Manchester) Partner

Consultation work includes

  • 2002-03: ELSAGEN: Ethical, Legal and Social Aspects of Human Genetic Databases. A European Comparison (2002-2005). Focus groups on privacy and trust in relation to human genetic databases
  • 2002-03: Script writing for'Genes for Life. Public education CD programme'produced by Innervate Limited sponsored by Roche Pharmaceuticals
  • 2003-04: For ESRC funded project'Family genetic registers as a genetic database: fears, hopes and ethical concerns of registrants'
