We are delighted to share with you the amazing difference the Sanctuary Fellowship has made to our fellows, and it really wouldn’t be possible without the support of our donors. As well as changing the lives of our fellows, it’s also brought together a community of people who share a commitment to protecting education which can only be a good thing.

After welcoming our first Fellow in 2018, our campaign has gone from strength to strength and we are pleased to tell you that with the support of our donors we have been able to welcome a second Fellow and their spouse to Lancaster University.

“It is hard to overestimate what the Lancaster University Sanctuary Fellowship makes possible; it contributes to an individual’s right to life, to their research and creativity that would otherwise have been terminated and to the future of freedom of speech and expression across the entire world.” – Lancaster Sanctuary Fellow

Our goal is to provide ongoing sanctuary to a Fellow in each of our four faculties by 2022 and we are continuing to work with Cara to provide a safe haven for a third Fellow once the current restrictions are eased.

Academic freedom was a founding principle of Lancaster University. It is an ethos that we hold as dear today as we ever have. We look forward to keeping you updated on the progress of our Fellows and how they are rebuilding their lives and careers, continuing their research, and, if safe to do so, making plans to return home.
