‘An absorbing, stirring novel’ (New York Times), Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai’s The Mountains Sing draws on her own family history and the stories of women survivors to paint a unique picture of the turbulent twentieth-century in Việt Nam - of a country pushed to breaking point and a family who refuse to give in.

Quế Mai will be in conversation with Dr. Zoe Lambert.

Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai is the best-selling author of The Mountains Sing - a New York Times Editor’s Choice. She is the first Vietnamese national whose fiction in English has been published to international acclaim. Her eight books of poetry, fiction and nonfiction in Vietnamese have earned her some of the top literary awards in Việt Nam including the Hà Nội Writers Association’s Poetry of the Year 2010 Award, the Capital’s Literature & Arts Award, and First Prize - the Poetry Competition About 1,000 Years Hà Nội. Quế Mai wrote The Mountains Sing as part of her Masters in Creative Writing at Lancaster University. She recently graduated from her PhD in Creative Writing at Lancaster during which she researched and wrote her second novel. She attributed her ability to become a novelist in English to her studies at Lancaster and is thrilled to return to the nest of her writing journey via a conversation with Dr Zoe Lambert – who was her PhD supervisor.
