Lancaster Research in 'Le Temps'
Lancaster's Marco Wyss has been quoted in Le Temps this week, in relation to his research on Swiss volunteers in the Waffen SS.
The article, 'Ces pensions allemandes qui dérangent', follows the raising of concerns in Belgium, France and now Switzerland about the pensions paid by Berlin to veterans wounded fighting for Germany in the Second World War.
Recipients of these pensions are likely to include not only Germans who have retired in Switzerland but also Swiss nationals who volunteered for the Waffen SS.
Around 1000 Swiss volunteered to fight for the armed wing of the SS, one of whom was the subject of Marco Wyss's first book, Un Suisse au Service de la SS: Dr Franz Riedweg (1907-2005). They volunteered for a range of reasons, whether ideological or practical, and went on to serve on the eastern front. On their return home, many were the target of judicial proceedings.
