Lancaster University’s research has been rated as world leading in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) which assesses the quality and impact of research submitted by UK universities across all subjects. Lancaster is ranked 13th for the percentage of world-leading research out of the 128 institutions listed and 18th in the UK overall.
  • Research in the Department of European Languages and Cultures (DELC) has played its part in Lancaster's successful results.  Our research is wide-ranging and interdisciplinary, contributing to the excellent results of two Units of Assessment in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), namely English Language and Literature, Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory.
  • Our literary scholarship has contributed to Lancaster's 3rd-place ranking in terms of research power, and 40 per cent of research assessed in this area is world-leading with 77 per cent of research ranking as either world-leading or internationally excellent.
  • Our film and theatre studies scholarship was also assessed as part of the university's submission to the Art and Design: History, practice and theory unit of assessment.  Lancaster was ranked as 17th best in the UK with around a third of research in this area considered as world-leading.
  • Dr Birgit Smith, Head of Department for European Languages and Cultures, said "It's gratifying to see our commitment and strengths in research producing some excellent results.  Our work is wide-ranging and interdisciplinary and reflects very well on Lancaster University's REF portfolio."
