The PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) certificate is an official Diploma issued by the Società Dante Alighieri under an agreement with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is recognised by the Italian Ministry of Labour and Social Policies and by the Italian Ministry of University and Research as a qualification for the proficiency in the Italian language for foreigners.

14 July 2021 – Update on PLIDA Certifying Centre at Lancaster University

We regret to inform you that due to unforeseen circumstances we are pausing all activities at our certifying centre until further notice (including the examination session in September 2021).

Please continue to check our website for updates and accept our apologies for the inconvenience this may cause.

The PLIDA certificates attest proficiency in Italian as a foreign language on a 6-level scale according to the parameters established by the Common European Framework for Languages (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).

The PLIDA certificates do not require attending specific language courses in schools/colleges/universities. The Syllabus and many other materials, e.g. admission tests to verify the level of proficiency in Italian and trial exams, are available online on the PLIDA webpage. Look out for 'Prove d'esame' (past exam papers).

The Certifying Centre at Lancaster University holds different exam sessions every year for levels A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

Candidates may choose to take an exam at the level they feel is closest to their proficiency. Registration does not require having taken lower-level tests and it is possible to take tests of more than one level during the same session.
