BIUCAC 2020 was the largest commercial awareness competition for law students in the United Kingdom, with over 4100 students participating. Jake secured the runner-up slot in this prestigious and highly-competitive event and we are incredibly proud of him and his success.

Speaking about his experience Jake explained:

“Competing in BIUCAC 2020 was an amazing opportunity that taught me much about the legal sector and commercial awareness, prepared me for pressurised situations, and helped me grow my network. I’d seriously recommend that any law students interested get involved. The competition starts with 3 rounds of multiple choice quizzes. 10 contestants were invited to Lancaster’s regional final, organised by Lancaster Law Society and judged by solicitors from local firm Oglethorpe, Sturton & Gillibrand. I was delighted to place second in the regional final, and progress to the national final.

The national final was split into 3 rounds: a written exercise, another multiple choice quiz, and 5 minutes of questions from a law firm partner. That got me through to a grand final, in which I gave a presentation regarding the electric vehicle market. Performing in front of the 70 other contestants, the graduate recruitment teams from sponsor firms, and the senior partner of law firm Fieldfisher, was as nerve-wracking as you can imagine, but I was absolutely ecstatic to finish second place!

I have to say a massive thank-you to everyone at the Law Society for organising the competition so efficiently; Prof Chris May, who met me before the national final and did a practice-run with me; and of course the BIUCAC team for delivering the competition! As a result, I’m incredibly excited to have two-weeks work experience with law firm BCLP, as well being assigned a trainee mentor, and a meeting with their grad recruitment team. Again, if you are interested, I would really encourage you to sign up for next years competition!”

Congratulations Jake!
