Active Learning is "A method that encourages student engagement through activity, group discussion, experimentation and role-play,in contrast to the passive memorisation of information." (Higher Education Academy). To launch our active learning group, we are organising a small-scale informal event with short talks and demonstrations to inspire discussion

We are creating an 'Active Learning Group' to take the place of the 'Flexible Learning Forum' created and managed by Hilary Thomas before leaving the University. The 'Active Learning Group' is not necessarily are placement for the 'Flexible Learning Forum' but is aimed to develop and to grow what Hilary created.

The aim of our 'Active Learning Group' is to share, discuss, support and amplify existing ongoing practice at Lancaster (and beyond) that relate to active learning and teaching methodologies. Our 'Active Learning Group' will also provide a forum to raise awareness of existing and emerging active learning methodologies, for example 'Team Based Learning' and the potential of 'digital technologies' that might support and enable those methodologies.

To launch our active learning group, we are organising a small-scale informal event "Discovering Active Learning". Our event will be held on Monday the 17th of December, 1pm until 3pm, in Library C130 (including tea, coffee and biscuits). The event will combine a number of short talks that aim to share practice and inspire discussion, with digital updates and demonstrations of digital technologies that might support active learning and teaching, so enhancing curriculum.
