The N8 watergroup is a unique collaboration of northern England\u2019s eight leading research-intensive universities brought together to exploit a world class knowledge base of over 330 scientists, with an unprecedented level of expertise in the science of sustainable water use<\/span><\/p>\n

N8 Debates 2011 \u2013 a trilogy of key debates at the policy\/technology interface<\/h2>\n

The N8 Research Partnership<\/a> in conjunction with the NERC-funded Catchment Change Network<\/a> and The Centre for Sustainable Water Management <\/a>at LEC are supporting a series of Debates during 2011 at the policy\/technology interface, designed to highlight outstanding issues and begin to identify ways forward. These will be very much participative and interactive sessions led by a Panel with an audience of invited guests. Each of our Debates will be streamed live and made available as edited highlights .<\/p>\n

I. \u00a0<\/span>\u00a0Encouraging multifunctionality by soil carbon sequestration<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/h5>\n

Our first N8 Debate on Encouraging Multifunctionality by Soil Carbon Sequestration<\/a> held in London\u00a0 at British Water and The Work Foundation proved to be a great success.\u00a0\u00a0A news feature and link to the Adobe Connect recording are now available<\/a><\/p>\n

II. \u00a0<\/span>Valuing the environment \u2013 looking beyond the economics<\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n

The second N8 Debate on Valuing the Environment: Looking beyond the Economics<\/a> took place on the 26th May 2011 at the Lancaster Environment Centre and was a resounding success.\u00a0 Chaired by Professor Louise Heathwaite, the event featured interactive questioning and input from a range of remote participants engaging online. Panel members included Ian Bateman (UEA), Allan Provins (eftec), Topsy Rudd (Cascade Consulting) and Graham Harris (Lancaster University).\u00a0\u00a0An overview and link to the Adobe Connect recording are now available<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

III. \u00a0<\/span>Food security and sustainable water supplies<\/a><\/span><\/h5>\n

September 22nd \u00a02011\u00a0at the Stockbridge Technology Centre, Selby, North Yorkshire
\nChair:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tim Burt, Durham University<\/p>\n

The third in our series of \u2018N8 Debates\u2019 during 2011 “Food Security and Sustainable Water Supplies”<\/a> focused on the national and international challenges associated with managing water resources in tandem with food and energy supplies.<\/p>\n

Professor Tim Burt (Durham University) chaired the Debate. Our panel members represented a range of stakeholder views and included Ian Bernard (British Water), Askok Chapagain (WWF), Bill Davies (Lancaster University) and Graham Ward (Stockbridge Technology Centre).<\/p>\n
