Current works

Week beginning 13 January 2020

Steel work installation

The next phase of the project is to construct the steel frame of the building, which will take approximately 6 weeks.

Deliveries of the steel will be co-ordinated throughout the above period and are not expected to cause disruption.

To construct the steel frame, a mobile crane will be situated on Library Avenue, within the existing site compound. The crane is expected on site from the 13th January and should not cause disruption.

During the installation, a number of holes will be drilled in to the exposed concrete wall of the Library. Though this work will be carried out externally, some noise disruption is expected internally to the Library. This will be monitored closely and controlled locally should works become too disruptive. Noisy works will be carried out before 11.00am.

If you have any queries about these works, please email the Facilities Helpdesk or phone them on 01524 593333

Thursday 14th November for approx 2 weeks.

There will be noisy works every morning until 11am. This is due to the contractors needing to dig out concrete slabs before they can start works on the foundations for the Extension.

We apologise for the inconvenience. The works will cease after 11am each morning. There are also noise-cancelling headphones available for loan at the Library Enquiry Desk.

Week beginning Monday 18th  November

There will be some minor additional works on these dates as some of the timber cladding will be removed and there will be some local concrete cutting to ascertain the construction the wall to allow the design of the final steel connections.

Monday 11th - Tuesday 12th November

The contractors are removing the concrete landing and steps from a redundant fire escape. Because this is particularly noisy work, the contractors will cease after 11am each morning.

A temporary internal wall is being installed, which will divide the buildng from the construction site, and is part of a strategy to mitigate disruption from the building works. A full-height, double-sided stud partition wall will be installed throughout the three floors of the West Building.

Wednesday 30th October to Sunday 3rd November 2019

One of the first actions required is to establish a new fire escape exit in the corridor where the toilets are located on A floor. This is to replace the existing route down the adjacent stairs and out the back door, an exit route that will not be available when the site compound is established.   Installing the fire escape involves knocking a hole in the external wall at the end of the corridor, installing a fire door and external staircase and some other associated changes. This work will take up to 5 days, will cause some local noise disruption and require closure of the toilets on A floor for part of the time. The following steps are being taken minimise the impact on library users and staff:

  • schedule the work from Wednesday to Sunday to avoid days when the Library is busiest
  • only close the toilets at the back of the corridor and only for part of the time. Toilets on B and C Floor will remain open throughout.
  • where possible, schedule noisier work to take place at the weekend
  • provide notice in advance via social media and web
  • provide local notices about the work and alternative facilities

Monday 12th August 2019 for approximately 3 weeks

The temporary wall will be installed one floor at a time, starting on A Floor and progressing up the building. This is likely to include weekend working. Notices in the building will advise you of the areas affected and staff will be available to help you to find study space away from the disruption.

During this time:

Week beginning 12th August for approximately one week

  • The self-issue machines on A Floor will not be available. Please use the machine on B Floor, or just see library staff, who will be happy to issue the books for you.
  • The Walk-in access machines on A Floor, for use by members of the public, will not be available. Please take this into account when planning your trip (this does not apply to members of the University who will still be able to use the Library PCs).

Week beginning 19th August for approximately one week

  • The toilets on B Floor will not be available. Toilets on A & C Floor will still be open.
  • Two bays of study space close to the works will not be available.

Week beginning 26th August for approximately one week

  • The toilets on C Floor will not be available. Toilets on A & B Floor will still be open.
  • Two bays of study space close to the works will not be available.
