Requests and Recalls
The Library is a shared resource for the whole academic community, and borrowing arrangements are designed to ensure that material is available for use within a reasonable period by any member of the University.
If all copies of an item are out on loan, you can request a copy through OneSearch.
You will need to log in first.
Search for your item, click on the title and then under Find & Request click on Request.
A recall e-mail will be sent to the person who has this item on loan asking them to return it within seven days* or by the due date if that is sooner. Fines will be charged on overdue recalled items.
*During the vacations people are given 14 days to return a recalled book.
We will e-mail you when it is ready for collection from the open access Requests for Collection shelves on A floor. If a book has another request on it when you borrow it, it will only be issued to you for a week (14 days in the vacations); you will not get a recall email. Please check the due date.
Recalls over Vacation
From the 26th of November 2020 any books which are recalled will be due back on the 11th of January 2021. This is earlier than normal to support the travel window for students between 3rd and 9th December.
Managing your requests
In My Account you can see where you are in the queue and cancel your request if you no longer require it.
You cannot request
- 24 hour and 3 hour loans
- reference items
- if you have external library membership
Items can be requested and recalled throughout the year except during the Christmas vacation. Please make sure you check your Lancaster e-mail regularly and can return any recalled items promptly.
Books and other items are issued subject to recall. The recall process ensures that items are available for use within a reasonable period by any member of the University.
If an item you have on loan is recalled you will receive an email to your Lancaster email address asking you to return it within a specified period. If a book has a request on it when you borrow it, it will only be issued to you for a week (14 days in the vacations); you will not get a recall email. Recalled books are indicated on your weekly account statement. Please check due dates carefully.
In term-time you will be asked to return a recalled item within seven days or by the original due date if the item is already due back within seven days or is overdue. During the vacations you are given 14 days to return a recalled book.
Overdue recalled books will incur fines of £2 per day up to a maximum of £10. If a recalled book is two weeks overdue, we will invoice you according to our Lost Books policy.
What if I am away?
If you are going to be away from the University you will still need to ensure that an item can be returned on time if it is requested by someone else. For example you would need to be able to post it back, or make sure that somebody else could return it for you. If you cannot guarantee this then we would advise you return your items before you go, as you will incur fines for any overdue recalled items.
You can return items by post to The Library, Lancaster University, Lancaster, LA1 4YH. Please retain your receipt from the post office as proof of postage.
