Prepayment Schemes

Current Prepayment Options, Offsetting Schemes and Open Access Memberships

Lancaster University has set up deposit accounts with some publishers, allowing prepayment of Article Processing Charges for UKRI research. These prepayment schemes are advantageous as they make gold OA payments easier and quicker to process and therefore enable your paper to be uploaded sooner. They also offer a small discount on each Article Processing Charge. We also have Publish and Read agreements with some publishers, such as Wiley and Springer, which give access to content but also allows authors to publish open access free of charge.

Lancaster University Library has used some of its UKRI block grant to fund these schemes:

  • ACS

An Open Access benefit program has been set up for 2020.

This means that 5 tokens are available to make UKRI funded articles open access (this is equivalent to 5 articles).  The tokens can be used for articles accepted in 2020, but please do contact openaccess@lancaster.ac.uk with details of your paper beforehand.

  • BioMed Central/Springer Open

Lancaster University has set up a Prepay Membership with BioMed Central for BMC and Springer Open journals. This allows a discount of 5% on Open Access Article Processing Charges for UKRI funded research. Please note that before using this prepayment option you must contact openaccess@lancaster.ac.uk first and receive approval before proceeding.

The Open Access team will supply a discount code once your funding application has been approved.  Please note that Springer Open Choice journals are considered separately.

  • The Company of Biologists

Lancaster University Library has signed up to a transitional open access agreement with The Company of Biologists.

The 'Read and Publish' deal permits researchers unlimited access to all three subscription journals from The Company of Biologists: Journal of Cell Science; Journal of Experimental Biology and Development, including the full archie dating back as far as 1853.

It also allows the accepted articles of corresponding authors to be published open access by default and without limit in these three hybrid journals - this is available to all Lancaster's researchers, whether funded or not.

  • De Gruyter Membership Account

Information for Authors from the UK.  Lancaster University's membership allows 20% discount on APCs and has prepaid 8 APCs, for papers accepted during 2020, enabling Lancaster authors to publish in hybrid journals without charge. This is for both UKRI funded and non-funded papers.

There is further information about De Gruyter’s Open Access options.

  • Frontiers

Lancaster University has entered an institutional agreement with Frontiers, allowing discount on Article Processing Charges (APCs).  Under the terms of the agreement eligible authors from Lancaster University may publish in any Frontiers journal at no cost to the author*.  Eligible authors include:

    • UK Research and Innovation (AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC, STFC) funded papers

To submit your article under this institutional agreement, please select ‘University of Lancaster’ as institutional payer in the invoice section when submitting your article. Frontiers will then verify your eligibility with the University of Lancaster Library’s Open Access team, and if confirmed, the APC will be paid by the Library upon acceptance.

*Please contact Lancaster University’s Open Access Team openaccess@lancaster.ac.uk before selecting Lancaster University as institutional payer to check that funding is available.

  • IWA Publishing

Lancaster University Library has signed up to a 'Read and Publish' agreement with IWA Publishing.

If you are a Lancaster University researcher you receive full online access to IWA's journal content.  There is also free Open Access publication for affiliated researchers, whether funded or not, although you must be a corresponding author.  Articles will be published with a CC BY licence.

To qualify for the waiver during the submission process, please ensure that you are listed on your article as the corresponding author and that you include your full institutional affiliation and associated email address.  Please read IWA's institutional waivers guidance to ensure the waiver is applied.

  • SAGE

Lancaster University has signed up to a 'Read and Publish' deal with SAGE allowing unlimited Open Access publishing in over 900 hybrid titles (whether you are UKRI funded or not).  This applies if you are the corresponding author.

If you want to publish in one of SAGE's gold Open Access journal you will receive 20% discount on your Article Processing Charge.  In this instance please email openaccess@lancaster.ac.uk upon acceptance to see if your APC could be approved. We have a UKRI block grant that could potentially be used for UKRI funded papers, but papers that are not funded would have to meet the strict criteria as detailed on our funding page

Please see Sage's website for further details.

  • Springer Open Choice

Lancaster University is participating in an open access agreement with Springer where Article Processing Charges for Lancaster corresponding authors are covered for Open Choice journals: these open access titles are listed on Springer Nature's website.  This is for both UKRI funded and non-funded papers.  (Please note, this scheme covers charges for journals listed as Hybrid (Open Choice) only, not those that are Fully Open Access).

  • Taylor and Francis

Lancaster University has set up a prepayment scheme with Taylor and Francis. It gives authors a 75% discount on Article Processing Charges. Please note that before using this prepayment option you must contact openaccess@lancaster.ac.uk first and receive approval before proceeding.

The author will be given different options and instructions upon submission. If your research is funded by UKRI then choose the Open Select publication route (Gold Open Access). Lancaster will appear on the list of participants in the prepayment scheme and you will be asked to contact apc@tandf.co.uk (with your full name, article and journal title and details of any funding).

Taylor and Francis have provided information on their Author Services site including a detailed list of Open Access license options, embargo periods and APCs by journal.

  • Wiley

Lancaster University Library has entered into a Jisc/Wiley Open Access Read and Publish agreement which includes open access publication charges (whether your paper is UKRI funded or not).

This means that as a researcher from Lancaster University you can publish research articles in a hybrid or fully open access journal published by Wiley without directly paying any open access publication charges. Wiley currently offers the following open access options to authors:

As an author simply select Lancaster University on the publication order form when submitting to a Wiley Open Access journal or opting for OnlineOpen. Please note that you must choose the open access option on acceptance as, once an article is published in Early View or in Issue online, authors are no longer eligible to publish OnlineOpen without charge through this agreement.   (And the Library would be unable to pay further charges.)

When accepted for publication you will be taken to Author Services to log in:

    • Author selects funder/funders from drop-down list and clicks “Add New” to add funders
    • OnlineOpen Selection: Author selects “Yes. I would like to order OnlineOpen” and clicks “Next”
    • License Agreement Signing. Since the author selected UKRI and OnlineOpen there is only one licence based on the choices author made during the workflow - the CC BY licence - and the system navigates to the licence agreement signing page. Author is displayed with an Open Access Agreement CC BY licence agreement with merged fields for electronic signing.
