Am I required to pay a deposit for the Study Start Programme and is it refundable?
Students may be required to pay £150 GBP in order to secure their place on the Study Start Programme. Your deposit should be paid via the Admissions Portal (postgraduate students).
How much are the tuition fees for the Study Start Programme?
The cost of the course in 2017 is £730. This includes: orientation, teaching, assessment and social events.
Accommodation will be invoiced separately. Accommodation costs for 2017 will be approximately £127 per week.
How do I know if I have a place on the Study Start programme?
You must accept the offer of a place on your main degree programme and inform the Admissions Officer that you would like to attend the Study Start course. Your offer will then be amended to state that you are to attend the Study Start course. We will email you with confirmation of your place on this programme, your place is guaranteed once we have received your acceptance (by return email) and we have issued our CAS so that you can apply for your study visa.
How can I apply for accommodation for the Study Start Programme? Can I live on campus? When will I move to my permanent room?
Once you have been accepted for a place on the Study Start Programme, you will automatically be guaranteed a room on campus. You will live in on-campus accommodation in one of the Colleges which has been allocated for our summer programmes from the Saturday before your course starts until the last Wednesday of the course, at which time you will then be asked to move to your term-time room. We will incorporate this move into your timetable and you will be provided with further information once you have arrived in Lancaster. If you do not require a room on campus for the Study Start Programme please contact the Summer Programmes Administration Coordinator.
What kind of rooms are available for Study Start students on campus?
Students will be offered an en-suite study-bedroom i.e. with your own personal bathroom, whilst you are staying in Study Start accommodation.
When should I arrive for the Study Start Programme?
Please arrive on Saturday or Sunday before the first day of the course, ready to begin the programme on Monday.
Can you provide a pick-up service from the airport?
Lancaster University provides a Coach Shuttle Service from Manchester Airport to the University on certain dates to coincide with Arrivals weekend and the start of your course.
Yes. You will receive an email containing pre-arrival and travel Information to help you plan your journey to Lancaster. This will be e-mailed to you in August once you have been accepted for the programme.
Will there be internet connection in my room and is there a charge for this service?
All University residence rooms are fitted with a datapoint for connection to the internet and have Wi-Fi connectivity. This is included in your accommodation fee. The service is managed by ISS, who will be able to answer any queries and respond to problems you may have in using it. Visit the ISS website for further information on the service.
Where do I go when I arrive at Lancaster University? Will there be somebody to show me to my room?
On your arrival, please go to the Porters Office for the College you are staying in. The Porter will issue you with a key and show you to your room. There is Porter cover 24-hours so there will always be somebody available, should you arrive during the day or night.
Should I bring my own bedding or will this be provided?
Bedding packs can be ordered for £39.50. Please email email@example.com to reserve one. You can collect your pack on arrival from the porter. After you collect your pack, you will be invoiced.
Where do I go on the first of the Study Start Programme?
When you arrive in Lancaster, the Porter will hand you a Welcome Pack with your key (if he/she doesn't, please ask for this). Please read the information very carefully in this pack as it will contain your Course Handbook and will give you the exact details of where to go on the first day. If you plan to live off-campus, please collect your Welcome Pack from the Course Office, Bowland North Seminar Room 2. You will also receive an email with details of where to go in advance of your arrival to Lancaster.
How do I pay my remaining fees?
Once you have arrived in Lancaster and began your course, you will be asked to pay your remaining fees. You will receive emails about this from Credit Control. Further information on this can be found at pay your fees and will also be provided in your Course Handbook.
What does a typical week involve on the Study Start Programme?
Students will generally receive around 3 classroom-based sessions per day; one-on-one tutorials on a weekly basis with their own personal Tutor and scheduled time for self-study. Students must be able to manage their own time efficiently and productively and there are periods of private self-study built into this course, so that students have the opportunity to develop good time-management skills. Students will need to do a substantial amount of reading as well as writing and redrafting of assignments during these periods and in the evenings in order to meet the deadlines set by their Tutors.
When will I receive my CAS for my visa?
We aim to issue your CAS as soon as your acceptance and deposit have been processed. If you do not receive your CAS within 2 weeks of receiving confirmation of us having processed your acceptance deposit for the Study Start then please contact the Visa team with your full name and application number.
I have only been granted a short-term visa, I am very worried. Can I extend my visa when I arrive in Lancaster?
First of all, please do not worry! It is very common for students, particularly those with a conditional offer, to only be granted a short-term visa. We will arrange for a member of Student Services to come and talk to you about the process of extending your visa and we will provide you with a visa extension form and all the necessary information you will need.
How do I apply for accommodation for my degree programme?
The College and Residence Office are responsible for the arrangements of your accommodation from October onwards. You will receive an e-mail in due course asking you to apply on-line, you will then receive notification of the room you have been allocated around mid-September and you will be asked to pay a deposit in order to secure your room.
Can I open a bank account when I arrive in Lancaster?
Yes. Once you have arrived and registered on the Study Start Programme and have officially registered with the University, you may then request a bank letter via the Student Portal in order to open a UK bank account. There are two banks on campus for students to choose from Barclays and Santander, and a number of other banks in Lancaster town centre, as well as banks that offer an online service.
