Trainee Actuary, First Actuarial

I chose to study the Management Mathematics programme at Lancaster University because it gave a good variety of modules with lots of choices to tailor the programme to just what I wanted out of it. For example, in the second and third year, you can choose from a wide variety of modules from stock management to modelling in Excel. The lecturers are enthusiastic, always willing to help, and some of the best lecturers in their field.

I have always wanted to be an actuary and I knew that this course would give me a good grounding in the skills I would need in order to succeed in such a career. The programme was challenging, with a variety of assessment (including exams, group projects, individual projects and presentations) which developed my confidence in speaking in groups, writing reports and working in a group of people I didn’t know. The Management School careers centre was also fantastic in helping me to achieve my career aims.

My years at Lancaster University were some of the best years of my life. The support networks that the University has in place are fantastic and the ‘campus feel’ is welcoming. You quickly feel part of a community, especially within your college!

I am now working as a trainee actuary in Leeds – not only did Lancaster give me the key I needed to get the job (a degree), it gave me lots of skills that I use every day at work. I am pleased I chose to study at Lancaster, particularly the Management Mathematics course – I would certainly recommend it!
