About my degree: MSc Economics
Posted on
I am now coming to the end of my Masters course in Economics after a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The course has been both stimulating and intellectually demanding, and has provided me with the confidence and tools to excel in the next stage of my life. I valued the opportunity to massively expand my knowledge and extend my analytical and problem-solving skills. I also enjoyed the chance to work with such a diverse and talented cohort, in a friendly and supportive learning environment.
I found the first core modules intellectually rigorous and included highly advanced economic theory and methods, excellently preparing you to take your academics further with PhD study or into a career in Economics. The second term allows you to specialise in optional modules, I particularly appreciated the chance to focus my interests in a certain area, or to broaden my knowledge on a range of economic topics. My interests, in particular, were varied, studying Health Economics, Public and Political Economy, Financial Economics and Behavioural Finance.
I found one of the greatest assets of Lancaster’s Economics Department was the opportunity to work with the high-quality teaching staff – all are experts in their relevant area and this showed during lectures and tutorials. From specialist econometricians to behavioural economists, each provided their own insightful, engaging and research-led teachings that made for a fantastic learning experience. Not only in lectures, but the one-on-one time with my supervisor has also been incredibly helpful during the time I have been writing my dissertation.
Not only from the Economics Department, but I have received a lot of support from the wider Lancaster University Management School. In particular, they have provided me with instrumental guidance when I began my job search through their Postgraduate Careers Service. From Career Fairs, employer skills workshops and help with initial applications, the support I was provided with was invaluable to my successful job search. I am very grateful to have secured a role as an Economic Analyst and start putting everything that I have learnt into practice. During the last year I also undertook an ambassador role with LUMS which gave me the chance to give something back to the department as well as meet with prospective students and talk to them about my experience at Lancaster.
Having spent 4 years at Lancaster University, I will miss the excellent facilities they have to offer, as well as the welcoming and tranquil environment. But I am able to leave feeling accomplished and prepared to advance in my career in Economics.
