Embracing the opportunities and tackling the challenges Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers to the future of both business and society are at the heart of a drive from Lancaster University. We will address how AI is already shaping the work environment, and how it will play a key role moving forward
The future of work increasingly depends on developments in the field of AI. The current wave of AI applications have set in train fundamental transformations in the ways business is conducted and work is organised across all sectors of the economy. This workshop will bring together experts from industry, policy and academia to discuss the practical opportunities this presents and how to manage the threats that come with it.
The workshop will bring together representatives of government, industry and academic research to identify opportunities and issues in the use of AI for business, as well as societal applications. Attendees include, among others: Phil Smith (former Chairman and Chief Executive of Cisco), Montserrat Gomendio (OECD), Stephen Cassidy (Chief Researcher at British Telecom), Tim Page (Trade Union Congress) and Chris Webber (Cabinet Office). It will address issues such how to manage an increasing skills gap in data science, retaining process expertise, and addressing regulatory, social and ethical concerns to effectively implement AI. Industry practitioners will discuss their experiences with AI, researchers will focus on current problematic issues, and senior policy-makers will provide insight on areas of focus and priority for the Government.
The following questions with respect to AI will be tackled:
- How is AI affecting the future of work and what are the careers of the future?
- Are we sufficiently preparing for these new AI inspired tasks/careers of the future?
- How do we manage the skills gaps (data science, process expertise, social and ethical concerns) to effectively implement AI?
- How can individuals, organisations and societal/government institutions deal with unintended and unforeseen consequences of AI?
- What management issues/challenges is AI raising?
- What regulations are needed to govern the effective use of AI?
