Tab Content: About ATP

Support for associate teachers, in particular Postgraduates and researchers who teach, is provided through the Higher Education Academy accredited recognised Associate Teacher Programme (ATP) and the one-day Introduction to Teaching at Lancaster (ITL) workshops.  These programmes are offered in the Michaelmas/Lent terms.

You are also encouraged to take advantage of any of the Continuing Professional Development Sharing Practice opportunities, intended for all those at Lancaster involved in teaching and supporting students learning.

The Associate Teacher Programme is designed to provide a framework for the academic and professional development of those who hold posts which involve some duties and responsibilities for supporting the development and/or delivery of learning opportunities.

Potential participants include a wide range of staff who support learning using information technology; in the laboratory; with flexible learning systems; in the studio or clinic; research staff with specialist teaching responsibilities; library, careers and advisory staff or hourly paid lecturers or seminar leaders with prescribed duties.

Successful completion of the ATP leads to recognition as an Associate Fellow of the HEA, from Advance HE - the national body for teaching in HE in the UK.

Tab Content: Structure and Focus of ATP

There is a requirement that participants have at least 10 hours of teaching contact time, or where contact hours are less, that they have a significant level of responsibility for that teaching.

The aims of the programme are:

  • To support individuals in their professional activities and development aspirations
  • To recognise individual professional achievements
  • To advance professional practice
  • To enhance the experience of students participating in higher education
  • To encourage the development of learning communities with shared values.

The programme is designed so that you can work on it part-time as you teach. There are core attendance sessions and submission deadlines in place to offer a structure to the programme, and to help you to prioritise the programme at certain times.

You will need a minimum of 10 hours teaching contact time during the term in which you are planning to do the programme (Term 1 - Michaelmas or Term 2 - Lent). If you have fewer contact teaching hours than this, but a significant level of responsibility for the teaching you are doing, please contact Jo Nicholson to discuss the suitability of this programme.

The core attendance requirement of the programme comprises two one-day workshops and two peer tutorial half day workshops linked to workshop two of the relevant cohort:

Workshop One - Introduction to Teaching at Lancaster (ITL) [for date options see below]

Workshop Two - Tools for Reflective Practice [either October 2019 or December 2019 cohorts see dates below]

  •  Peer Tutorial One
  •  Peer Tutorial Two

Workshop One - Introduction to Teaching at Lancaster (ITL):

If you have already completed the ITL workshop you will just need to register for one of the cohorts detailed below. You could have attended the first workshop (ITL) during academic years 2017/18, or 2018/19, or one of the dates in Michaelmas 2019 terms as this is also offered as a standalone workshop.

If you have not yet attended an Introduction to Teaching at Lancaster (ITL) workshop and wish to undertake ATP this academic year, you will need to book onto one of the following ITL workshops this academic year.

Please note that if you are teaching in Michaelmas term, the date of your ITL workshop must take place before you attend the Tools for Reflective Practice workshop in October 2019.  Those enrolling to start ATP in December 2019, who are unable to attend an ITL earlier in Michaelmas term, must enrol and attend one of the January workshops to satisfy the attendance requirements of the programme:
