About us

We are a medium-sized department that prides itself on the flexibility of our courses, our research-led teaching, and the excellent sense of community that we create for our students. Single honours students take a common first year. In later years, students choose from a variety of optional modules that reflect our world-leading and internationally excellent research. Students can opt into pathways that will maximise their exposure to fields like Quantum Technology, Particle Physics, Astrophysics, Cosmology or Space Physics, retaining a broad grounding in fundamental physics while specialising in a particular sub-discipline. We offer 4-year (MPhys) and 3-year (BSc) degree courses in Physics, Physics with Astrophysics and Theoretical Physics. Single honours students can switch degree schemes up to the end of their 1st year. We also offer 4-year (MSci) and 3-year (BSc) degree courses in Theoretical Physics with Mathematics jointly taught with the Maths department. Our degrees are accredited by the Institute of Physics (IoP) and cover the general and specialist skills valued for further student and employment in the private and public sectors. Within the department, our employability champion ensures that our students have the right support to transition to life after university
