Religious Studies

Lancaster University pioneered Religious Studies in the UK as a discipline separate from theology.  In 1967 it founded the first Religious Studies Department and the first Professorship in Religious Studies.  Religious Studies is taught within the Department of Politics, Philosophy and Religion.  Our department’s research was ranked 1st in the UK for “Impact” and 3rd overall, in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework.  Religious Studies at Lancaster gives you the opportunity to study the world's major religious traditions and to debate about the role of religion in the modern world.
