Brigflatts Friends’ Meeting House Interior

At first there was no ceiling, and Friends were appointed yearly to stuff moss into the gaps between the roofing flags to keep out the draught (David M. Butler Quaker Meeting Houses Volume II (London: Friends Historical Society, 1999) 788). The gallery was built by 1714: originally there was a loft accessed by a ladder. Visitors are shown the dog-pen at the foot of the stairs for sheepdogs accompanying their masters to Meeting.
