Cockermouth Church

‘I went to Cockermouth where the priest Larkham the priest that first opposed me as aforesaid lived.’ George Larkham MA, ‘the Star of the North’ was only 24 at the time, with a distinguished career as a Congregationalist before him. He appears to have been much loved by his congregation. He was ejected from Cockermouth Church at the Restoration in 1660, despite a general petition that he be allowed to remain, and had to go on the run for several years. ‘He was a man of brisk Parts and bold Temper till the latter part of his Life, when he grew more Pensive.’ He died in December 1700.
