Colton, Holy Trinity Church

Adam Sandys was the benefactor of this church. In 1650 it was said to be ‘distant ... nyne myles’ from the parish church of Hawkshead, and to have ‘no maintainance nor Minister, but onely what the Inhabitants please to contribute’. Sandys’ 1662 will provided them with a ‘preaching schoolmaster’ who was to officiate in the chapel as well as in the school.
There is a stunning view from the church across to the Furness Fells (see next image).
