Houses on road through Garsdale

Garsdale is the valley of the River Clough. There are scattered houses and farms: these are built along the A684 somewhat further west than the road up to Grisdale. Nonetheless they appear as a settlement on seventeenth-century maps. We do not know exactly where Major Bousfield lived. Fox's chronology is a bit confused at this point: he came through the Dales to Major Bousfield's, and then passed through Grisedale; but before that he had been to 'one Tennant's' back in Langstrothdale, and after that he went into Dent — and presumably then on to Garsdale.
