Lancaster Castle and Priory Church: panorama from the east

On the skyline to the left, Heysham; in front of it Overton (Colonel West). Castle, left to right: John of Gaunt’s Gateway; Keeper’s Lodgings (19th-century); Well Tower; Keep (behind); Male Felons’ Prison (19th-century). In Fox’s day the curtain wall ran backwards from the Well Tower to the Keep, and it is possible that the wall between John of Gaunt’s Gateway and the Well Tower was damaged or flattened. The Castle was largely used as law courts and jail. To the right of the Castle, the Priory Church of St Mary. To the left of the Castle in the distance, Heysham. To its right on the skyline, Walney Island (Piel Castle) and Barrow in Furness. Extreme right, in this side of the Bay, the beginnings of Morecambe. The river Lune is behind the trees. The Market Square with the old Town Hall (now the Museum) is in the foreground left of centre.
