The official Guide to the Sands was appointed by the Monarch by Royal Charter. His salary is traditionally £15 p.a., but he also has a tied cottage at Kents Bank. This charter, dated 23 March 1 George II (1728), appoints one John Carter to the Officium Custodi Conductori et Gubernatori Zabulorum prope Cartmel (‘the office of Guardian, Guide, and Governor of the sands near Cartmel’).

The current Guide is Michael Wilson, who took over from Cedric Robinson MBE in 2019.
