Ulverston and Cartmel Sands from below Conishead Priory, 1832

Engraved by J. Kernot from a drawing by Thomas Allom for Thomas Rose The Northern Tourist (London: Fisher, 1832-1835).

The sands crossing from Ulverston to Cartmel. Conishead Priory was originally an Augustinian foundation which is said to have kept a light burning as a guide to those crossing the sands. After the Dissolution the building was dismantled and it became a private estate. Its early-19th-century successor is now a Buddhist centre.
