Countesses
(‘And great Ladys & countesses came to see a man yt they saide was to dye ’):

The precise mention of countesses suggests that Fox had at least one particular countess in mind, and it seems highly likely that this was Lady Anne Clifford, Dowager Countess of Dorest, Pembroke, and Montgomery, who had returned to her inheritance in the North in 1649. She founded Appleby almshouses in 1652.
