CEEDS Seminar: Using remote observations in biodiversity research. 4 November 3:00 - 4:30pm

Following the successful format of previous seminars, we are pleased to announce that Tom August will lead a seminar on “Using remote observations in biodiversity research”. From drones and phones to GPS collars and camera traps; we will be exploring how new data science methods are making greater sense of remotely collected data in biodiversity. After the talks, there will be a discussion of the opportunities that new technologies bring to the analysis and interpretation of remotely collected data, and the challenges faced by researchers in making their visions a reality.

Speakers:

  • Lindsay Banin (UKCEH): Co-production of a mobile app for climate-smart cocoa

  • James Boon (Lancaster University): Aliens in the twilight zone: using robots to study and manage invasive lionfish on Caribbean mesophotic coral ecosystems

  • Serge Wich (Liverpool John Moores University): Drones and machine learning for conservation

  • Tom Dally (UKCEH and University of Leeds): Acoustics: testing the performance of a novel survey method for flower-visiting insects

The seminar is open to all staff from UKCEH and Lancaster University. To join please click on the Zoom link:

One further CEEDS seminar will take place this year on:

● 25 November 2:00-3:30pm: Environmental monitoring from space: embracing the era of pervasive Earth Observation. This seminar will address the current move towards the widespread use of Earth Observation in environmental science, and the role that data science can play in this transition.

Further details, including the web link, for this seminar will be circulated later.
