Lancaster Biosciences excels in latest league table

Lancaster University has been ranked 4th in the UK and best in the North-West for the study of biosciences, in the The Guardian University Guide 2022.

The Guardian University Guide ranks UK universities on nine metrics including how satisfied students are with their course and the teaching; the student-staff ratio, career prospects and how many students drop out of their course. Lancaster University was ranked 4th amongst the 102 universities assessed for their Biosciences courses.

Nearly 90% of Lancaster students studying Biosciences are satisfied with their course and 92.5% are satisfied with the quality of the teaching. Career prospects are excellent, with 97% in graduate level work or further study 15 months after graduation.

Lancaster University offers more than 20 undergraduate Biosciences courses covering the environmental, biochemical and biomedical aspects of biology, including degrees in Biomedicine and Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, Biology, Zoology and Ecology & Conservation. The wide variety of modules offer students the opportunity to specialise and gain a range of skills required to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing our planet, whether it's researching underlying scientific principles or helping to protect endangered species.

Professor Phil Barker, director of the Lancaster Environment Centre said: "Challenges such as the biodiversity crisis and climate emergency draw heavily on the biosciences. Equipping students with the interdisciplinary skills needed to become future leaders in these and other related fields is a corner stone to our programmes. The flexible nature of our courses promotes choice and is appreciated by our students."

Dr Paul McKean, Head of Department in Biomedical and Life Sciences said “The COVID-19 pandemic has underlined how important research and innovation in the biosciences are in allowing society to respond to many of the important challenges of the 21st Century. Our focus on research-based teaching provides students with the skills and perspective to go on to careers aimed at tackling those challenges. We are very proud of our graduates and it’s great to see this reflected in our league table position.”
