So many firsts - Graduation 2018

Congratulations to the 188 students from the Lancaster Environment Centre graduating this week, with an increasing number getting 1st class degrees.

This year 58 students are graduating with a 1st, 31% of the cohort, which is well above the national average: 86% of students are being awarded a 1st or 2:1, considered ‘good’ degrees’.

Professor Phil Barker, Lancaster Environment Centre director, congratulates students and staff on their “fantastic” effort in achieving these results and wishes the new graduates all the best for the future.

The following students won prizes:

  • Lancaster Environment Centre Prize for the best overall performance by a fourth year LEC MSci or MArts student: Philippa Liggins (MSci Hons Earth and Environmental Science)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Innovation Prize for the best performance by a LEC undergraduate student in engaging with Enterprise and Business Partnership activities: Bethany Tranter (BA Hons Geography)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best Overall BA Hons Performance Prize: Daniel Jenkinson (BA Hons Geography)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best Overall BSc Hons Performance Prize: Harriet Simpson-Southward (BSc Hons Physical Geography (Study Abroad))
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best BA Hons Dissertation Prize: Daniel Jenkinson (BA Hons Geography)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best BSc Hons Dissertation Prize: Jane Hardy-Jones (BSc Hons Geography) and Alexandra Spence (BSc Hons Environmental Science)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best MSci Hons Dissertation Prize: Bethany Sloan (MSci Hons Earth and Environmental Science)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best Overall BA/MArts Hons Performance in Second Year Prize: Thomas Dean (BA Hons Economics and Geography)
  • Lancaster Environment Centre Best Overall BSc/MSci Hons Performance in Second Year Prize for the highest overall aggregate score on Year 2 of a LEC BSc/MSci programme: Amy Cooper (BSc Hons Geography)
  • James Baxter Memorial Prize for the Year 3 undergraduate reading for a BSc/MSci degree in Biology Environmental Biology or Ecology and Conservation who has displayed the most diligence, enthusiasm and good progress: Hollie Blaydes (BSc Hons Ecology and Conservation)
  • Andrew Malloch Memorial Prize for the Year 3 undergraduate reading for a BSc/MSci degree in Biology, Environmental Biology or Ecology and Conservation who has demonstrated the greatest enthusiasm and skill in field ecology: Alex Cairns (BSc Hons Biology)
  • Gordon Manley Prize for the best contribution by dissertation (LEC.300/301/499) or otherwise to the enhancement of knowledge of the evolution of any part of the physical or atmospheric environment of NW England between the Mersey and the Solway: Elizabeth Walters (BSc Hons Geography)
  • Sandra Irish Memorial Prize for overall contribution (helpfulness and positive spirit) to the department by a final year undergraduate student: Josh Fryer (BSc Hons Geography)
  • Keith Beven Hydrology Dissertation Prize for the best undergraduate Hydrology dissertation: Lydia Cowell (BSc Environmental Science SA)
  • Royal Society of Biology Prize: for the best performance in the Biological Sciences: Amy Clarke (BSc Hons Biochemistry (Study Abroad)
