Internship Programme

Information for students

Internships are open to current students and recent graduates of the Faculty of Science and Technology. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for new vacancies when they are added to the website.

Gaining experience and skills

Relevant work experience while you are at university is crucial to achieving a good graduate job. Internships offer you the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge in real world situations - and get paid for it!

They will help you develop transferable skills such as:

  • Team working
  • Time management
  • Leadership
  • Networking
  • Commercial awareness

Many employers use interns to test out a new role and frequently offer graduate roles to interns.

Case studies of successful internships are available on our website.

Working around academic requirements

We provide full time 2-3 month summer internship opportunities from July to September. These are normally advertised and recruited between February and May each year.

Part-time internships are available all year round at varying durations to fit around your academic requirements.

There are no legal restrictions on the number of hours UK and European Economic Area (EEA) students aged 18 or over can work while studying. However, Lancaster University recommends no more than 10 to 15 hours a week during term time. This figure aims to balance financial need and academic workload, so it is not advisable to exceed this limit.

Restrictions for non-EEA students depend on what is stamped in your passport. Many non-EEA students can work up to 20 hours a week during term time and more during vacations. UKCISA: UK Council for International Student Affairs - Working in the UK during your studies has useful information and a regularly updated factsheet.

Interns will receive a monthly payment by Lancaster University for their work. The hourly rate is shown on each internship advert but is approximately £1,000 per month for full time work.

Location and Travel

All internships will take place at the host organisation with the intern working from their premises for the entirety of the internship. The majority of businesses will be located in the Northwest of England, but opportunities outside this area will be available.

Interns are responsible for arranging their accommodation and/or commute during the internship.
