New Deal for Communities

Evaluating the health inequalities impact of complex area based regeneration programmes

Welcome to our project web pages, which describes research underway to investigate the health inequalities impact of one of England's largest area based regeneration initiative - New Deal for Communities.

The research is a joint endeavour between Universities of Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester and St Andrews and the Medical Research Council's Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing in London.

These pages provide information on two funded studies:

  • Three year study (started January 2010) funded by Department of Health is investigating the impact of New Deal for Communities on inequalities in health and the social determinants of health within NDC areas and areas across the social spectrum.
  • Two year study (started December 2011) funded by National Institute for Health Research to assess the impact of different approaches to community engagement on the living conditions, health and wellbeing of the residents who became engaged in NDC decision-making structures and on the people living in NDC areas.

For further information about either study, please contact Professor Jennie Popay (j.popay@lancaster.ac.uk).
