Dr Paul Rayson

Dr Paul Rayson will outline the breadth of computational language analysis research that is now possible, showcasing recent and ongoing projects and PhD topics in Natural Language Processing (NLP) at Lancaster University, and a little history of the UCREL research centre which bridges computer science and linguistics. He will give an overview of NLP methods which operate at lexical, grammatical, syntactic and semantic levels and where corpus linguistics and NLP techniques coincide and co-operate. Finally, Paul will highlight how the wide variety of other academic disciplines working with textual sources can benefit from and drive improvements in the NLP methods, as well as exemplifying how NLP can be applied to real-world challenges and issues.
