The excitement created by the ‘New AI’ has resulted in many claims being made about the role of computing in society. Not only will new systems take over in work, service our needs at home and beat us at play, but how people judge themselves will be measured in part through reference to AI. This research theme explores all these issues: How do claims about AI affect visions of the future? Are we being pulled to that future by these visions? And besides, how new are these visions? Is it a future from the past that beckons?
In any case, just what can these new computers do? Can probability calculations, the engine of this New AI, alter the shape of human reasoning? If so, how? Can machine and human reasoning work together? How? What are the design problems?
These and many more questions are central to this theme of research at the ISF.
