‘Actualité d’Actuelles III’
A little over a year ago, Gallimard published Actuelles Ill: Chroniques algériennes in the Folio collection. This was a rather extraordinary gesture considering that this was probably the least known, least read, and certainly the least sold book by Camus. I shall examine why this book was reprinted in the popular Folio collection in November 2002, why it was met by a silence when it was first published in 1958, and what it reveals about Camus (his political and ethical positions with respect to an evolving Algeria from the late 1930s to the late 1950s). I shall also examine this work in light of the second (civil) Algerian war of the 1990s, and in relation to the return to Camus inaugurated by the publication of Le Premier Homme in March 1994.
