You may hear data science could make good decisions, like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lancaster.ac.uk\/stor-i-student-sites\/ziyang-yang\/2021\/04\/02\/association-analysis-in-retail-industry-how-grocery-stores-knows-pregnancy\/\"> data science help groceries to make a better decision<\/a>. And you may be also familiar with the travel route planned by Google map! Like us, delivery companies also plan an optimized route for drivers. For example, drivers for delivery companies (e.g.\u00a0Amazon) have to\u00a0deliver hundreds of parcels to many different addresses every\u00a0day. This is because usually, they think they are more familiar with this area and have their own driving habits.  Unfortunately, most time, they increase the time required to\u00a0unload packages from the van at stops. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pond5.com\/robot-vs-human-humanity-and-illustration-080489054_iconl_nowm.jpeg\" alt=\"Stubbornness Illustrations ~ Stock Stubbornness Vectors | Pond5\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Data scientists always consider how accurate their model is but paying less consideration to monitor the implementation of the whole process.  However, make sure the whole process as the plan is much harder than designing an efficient algorithm. Recently, Amazon and MIT hold a new <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.science\/blog\/amazon-mit-team-up-to-add-driver-know-how-to-delivery-routing-models\" target=\"_blank\">competition<\/a>, that they want to find a solution that reducing the probability of drivers&#8217; deviation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our group discussed this problem and considered 2 possible ways to help improve the drivers&#8217; loyalty:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Specific personalised driver routes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most drivers are deviating from the route plan since they have their own driving habits. So, why not design an optimised route combined with their driving habits? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.scotsman.com\/images-i.jpimedia.uk\/imagefetch\/https:\/\/jpgreatcontent.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/SKODAMarketplace002.jpg?width=2048&amp;enable=upscale\" alt=\"Skoda trials in-car alerts for discounts on fuel, food and more | The  Scotsman\" width=\"458\" height=\"293\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We could collect information:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Driver information: driving experience, driving years, age, familiarity with delivering area, customer satisfaction, etc&#8230;..<\/li><li>Feedback from the driver: satisfaction about the route plan, reasons for deviations, unusual traffic report, etc&#8230;<\/li><li>GPS data: track the deviation, estimated optimal time and real-time.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With these data, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reinforcement_learning#:~:text=Reinforcement%20learning%20(RL)%20is%20an,supervised%20learning%20and%20unsupervised%20learning.\">reinforcement learning<\/a> could learn how to design an optimised route incorporating drivers&#8217; preference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reward and penalty system<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea is not related to techniques but psychology. It is also useful if we could set a reward and penalty system:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/positivediscipline44.files.wordpress.com\/2017\/07\/picture-for-parent-blog-2.gif\" alt=\"Positive Discipline \u2013 Don`t let your self be so concerned of raising a good  kid that you forget you already have one.\" width=\"304\" height=\"198\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Reward drivers for loyalty to prescribed\u00a0routes and reward drivers who deviate the route but finish their travel in a time shorter than optimised time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022Penalties for\u00a0deviations which cause delays<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We only came up few ideas during the problem-solving day. There still are other good ideas to tackle this issue, and the competition of Amazon is operating now! During the discussion, we are given a video, and we found this is really helpful!
