UK Undergraduate students can apply for funding to enable them to take part in an academic field course or department-organised trip.
For more information about funding available please read through our FAQs.
The Lancaster Global Travel Fund is available to UK undergraduate students taking part in an international field trip, LEC field course, or department-led international trip for whom cost would be a barrier to their participation.
The funding we receive is dictated by the University Access Agreement. In the 2019/20 academic year our awards were granted primarily to students who were in receipt of a means-tested bursary from the University. There are also a number of other criteria for reaching students most in need which we may take into account when offering this funding to students:
Awards from this fund are given out on a first-come, first-served basis. Awards can differ in amount depending on the situation a student is in.
The criteria for awards in the 2020/21 academic year have not yet been finalised, but will likely be similar to the 2019/20 award criteria.
The fund will cover a portion of the fee charged by the academic department that runs the field trip. The grant covers up to 75% of the fee for those students that are deemed to be in most need based on the criteria above, but students may receive less depending on their personal circumstances.
Funding applications for trips taking place in the 2020/21 acaemic year have not yet opened. We anticipate that the application form will be available later this summer.
In order to apply for funding, you will need to fill in our online form. You will be asked for details about the field trip that you want to take part in, along with some details about your personal circumstances. The Global Experiences team will then check your details against the centrally-held University records and get back to you by email to confirm the level of award that you are able to receive. The team will aim to process your application as soon as possible, but please be aware that at busy periods the processing time may be up to two weeks.
Students can apply for funding until 2 weeks before the start date of the field trip, but please be aware that it might not be possible to sign up for a trip at that point.
The funding will be paid directly to the department responsible for the field trip. The funding will be decided based on the total fee due but any applicable deposit payments will need to be paid by the student before the funding would be paid.
You will be given access to an online pre-departure training course to help you prepare for your international trip. You will also be invited along to sessions about cultural awareness and employability skills so you can make the most of your time overseas.
The Global Experiences team runs a variety of short-term travel opportunities during the vacation periods. For more information about these trips visit the Vacation Programmes website. Travel grants are also available for students on these programmes.
