Presenter Jim Al-Khalili filmed at the low temperature physics lab in the Department of Physics last week, for the BBC 4 series The Story of Electricity where he explained how cooling mercury to low temperatures increases its ability to conduct electricity. Dr Richard Haley from the department assisted him and set up the experiment. The 3-part series will be broadcast in the autumn.

Subject Librarian and ‘Ironman’ competitor Andy Holgate has been filmed by BBC TV North West Tonight for a news item due to be broadcast on Sunday March 13 at 5.50pm. Andy has written a book ‘Can’t Swim, Can’t Ride, Can’t Run’ about his transformation from 'couch potato’ to Ironman competitor. The BBC filmed Andy swimming, running and cycling on campus.

Dr Janet Eccles (PPR) took part in a discussion on BBC Radio 4’s Beyond Belief programme on February 28, in a discussion about men and spirituality.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Wellings is among signatories to a letter, in the Observer, March 5, about international students, and another letter in the Telegraph, about investment in a high speed rail network.

Professor Cary Cooper (LUMS), was quoted in the Guardian, March 5, about employers taking a greater interest in their staff’s health and wellbeing. The story also featured on the TMC net website.

Professor Jim Taylor (LUMS) has written an article for the SecEd website, March 3, about the introduction of the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) into schools.

Professor Tony McEnery (Linguistics and English Language) has been quoted in the Edmonton Journal about his research into teenage language use.

Dr Mark Garnett (PPR) was interviewed on BBC Radio Lancashire, March 11, about Prince Andrew’s role as a trade ambassador.

Dr Maggie Mort (SHM/Sociology) was interviewed by Jenni Murray for BBC R4’s Woman’s Hour about the 2001 foot and mouth outbreak and the long term effects of the disease on the lives of women and their communities.
