HOW TO APPLY

You can obtain a postgraduate application form from:

Postgraduate Admissions Office
University House
Lancaster University
Lancaster LA1 4YW
England

telephone 01524 592032
fax 01524 592065
email pgadmissions@lancaster.ac.uk

Alternatively, you can download a postgraduate application form from the university web site: http://www.lancs.ac.uk

For detailed information on a course or programme, please contact the postgraduate enquiries number for your chosen department as listed in this Prospectus. We can advise you better if you clearly state your qualifications and your field of interest.

Completed applications should be returned to the Postgraduate Admissions Office at the address above. The same form is used whether you are applying for full-time or for part- time study, a taught course or research. You should pass the two reference forms to your two referees to complete as soon as possible. The reference forms should be returned directly to your chosen department.

When to apply
You may apply at any time. Apply early if you can, particularly if you are applying from overseas and/or if you are applying for a popular course or department. Where there is a specific deadline date, this is given in the particular departmental entry. Please also take note of any deadlines for relevant sponsorships of studentships which might require you to have applied to the University.

How applications are dealt with
Applications are recorded in the Postgraduate Admissions Office then immediately referred to departments for consideration. After considering your application in conjunction with your references and transcripts the department may then invite you for interview. If the department wishes to accept you, it will make a recommendation to this effect to the Postgraduate Admissions Office, from which you will receive a formal offer of admission once the recommendation has been approved. The offer may be unconditional, or conditional upon your achieving further qualifications or providing evidence of competence in English (such as an IELTS score of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL score of 580).

The normal entry requirements for postgraduate courses are specified in the course details in this Prospectus.

Admission to a research degree (MPhil/PhD) normally requires at least a good second class honours degree or an equivalent qualification, though previous study at Masters degree level will also be taken into account.

Organisation
The Postgraduate Admissions Office forms part of the Postgraduate Studies Office which is situated on A floor of University House, the main administrative building on campus. The Postgraduate Studies Office comprises two administrative sections, Postgraduate Admissions and Postgraduate Records.

The Admissions section handles all aspects of individual postgraduate admission, including the issuing of offers, student funding and the provision of advice on applications procedures.

The Records section is responsible for students registration arrangements, fees, advice on academic issues and registration information, award of degrees and servicing postgraduate committees.

Enquiries are welcome during normal working hours.

Registration
There is a Registration Day at the beginning of the Michaelmas Term which all new students who are registering for research or taught courses should attend. If your studies start at some other time of the year or if you are a part-time student who finds it impossible to attend you may register by post. Details will be sent to you by the Postgraduate Admissions Office.

Graduation
Higher degrees are conferred at Degree Congregations held at the beginning of December each year when the University welcomes its Chancellor, HRH Princess Alexandra.
