Akram Khan
KAASH

Monday 21st October @ 8pm.Tickets £7.50, £4.50 conc.

Followers of Akram Khan will know that this show, originally scheduled for May 2002 had to be cancelled at the last minute due to injuries sustained on a punishing European tour. Keen not to disappoint, and refreshed after a break, Akram and his company are coming to the Nuffield with the much anticipated Kaash. 'Kaash' (taken from the Hindu word for 'what if') is a quintet of between 40 and 45 minutes in length. It harnesses some of the common musical time cycles used in traditional Indian music as the basis for a choreographic structure. Using the cinematic idea of 'flashback', the end is seen at the beginning and then unravels to reveal how it arrived at its conclusion.

'Kaash' is inspired by the notion that the behaviour and symbolism of traditional Indian Gods (Ganesha, Krishna and Shiva) are representations of rhythmical patterns and specific movement qualities. Thus Ganesha the Elephant God is associated with a 3-beats swinging motion; Krishna the fluteplaying God is associated with 4 beats portraying his mischievous and daring qualities, and Shiva the Destroyer- vigorous, violent and explosive, is represented by 7 beats.
