Descartes 4: Seminar

1. SUBSTANCE.

Can we attach meaning to the question: 'What are the fundamental units of the Universe?' Is this a question for Physics?

2. THE PLENUM.

Is Descartes' claim that the physical Universe is a plenum coherent? (Can you have movement in a plenum?) Is the alternative, atomism, coherent? (Can you have an indivisible something that occupies space?)

3. PHYSICALITY.

What is it for a thing to be a physical' / 'material' object? D. says: extension.
His argument against 'hardness' being an essential property. Jen's smell object.
