Numbers.

You can represent numbers on a machine, and you can get the machine to add numbers and subtract them. You can do this of course with simple clock-like mechanisms. You don't have to think of electronics.

Pictures can also be represented in machinery - more of this a we go on.

So can games, and the movement of tides and ...

We bump into the point here once again that you can make anything represent anything. This would mean that anything can be represented by machinery, if you make it so.
