What are Academic Masterclasses?

Want to know what it’s like to study at Lancaster University? Find out by taking part in hands-on activities, lectures and seminars at our Year 12 Academic Masterclasses.

At our Academic Masterclasses, you will have the opportunity to engage with a subject you are passionate about for a full day, learning from our world-leading academics. Throughout the day you will learn about a particular issue or topic in great depth, taking part in a variety of activities that could include lectures, small-group discussions or laboratory sessions.

At our Academic Masterclasses, you will engage with a subject you particularly enjoy for a full day, giving you the opportunity to explore a particular issue or topic in depth. Throughout the day, you will take part in various different activities designed to give you an insight into university-style teaching and learning. This might include

  • Lectures
  • Laboratory sessions
  • Small-group discussions/tutorials
  • Computer analysis
  • Independent research/study

Throughout the day, you will also have the chance to meet with our staff and current students, giving you the opportunity to find out more about what it is like to study at Lancaster.

Chemistry

Nanoparticles: If you want to get excited about chemistry, start small! This masterclass offers a look into materials science, with an introduction to nanoparticles. Throughout the session, we’ll guide you through the process of synthesizing gold nanoparticles and working with ferro-fluids. With the chance to experience and investigate these particles’ unique physical properties, it’s a session that’s bound to capture your imagination.

Computer Science

Digital Coal: The challenges and complications of Jevon’s Paradox within ICT

Geography and Environmental Science

Volcanic Hazards: This session focuses on building up your existing knowledge of volcanic hazards, looking closely at bubbles and lava flows. We recommend that you have previously studied volcanics at GCSE or A-level in order to have a background understanding of this topic.  

Media and Cultural Studies

A fantastic opportunity to find out what it’s like to study Media and Cultural Studies at Lancaster University.

Medicine

Introduction to Problem Based Learning: Discover what it is like to study at medical school at our Problem Based Learning (PBL) masterclass. You will have the opportunity to apply your existing knowledge to a case study whilst also gaining a real insight into degree-level study from our current medical students.

Sociology

A fantastic opportunity to find out what it’s like to study Sociology at Lancaster University.

Social Work

A fantastic opportunity to find out what it’s like to study Social Work at Lancaster University.

Our Academic Masterclasses are for students in Year 12 who would like to find out more what it is like to study at Lancaster University.

In order to attend one of our Academic Masterclasses, you must:

  • Be on track to achieve BBB/DDM or above in A-level/BTEC. Alternative qualifications also considered.
  • Meet two or more of our widening participation criteria, details of which can be found on our website.

Please note additional academic criteria may apply depending on your subject choice.

Our Academic Masterclasses are an excellent opportunity to find out what it’s like to study at a highly-ranked, research-intensive university. By spending a day with our staff and students exploring a subject you particularly enjoy, you will gain a real insight into what it is like to study at degree-level. What’s more, you will have the opportunity to find out about the variety of courses available and what you need to achieve in your current studies in order to progress onto studying at Lancaster University.
